Why Fremont( WA) neighborhood has many organic stores or institutions?

Seattle's Fremont district has been a progressive area since the late 60's, embracing the hippie movement's better attributes, starting with organic produce and hemp products. It's quietly blossomed over the years (with a few fits and starts) into the laid-back, mellow, somewhat commercialized place it is today.
